Evaluating Fleet size and Productivity

  • By Cesar Yepez

Summer time can have a different meaning for various companies depending on their industry and their seasonality trends.  For some it means they will experience an increase in businesses while others might experience a decrease or no change at all.  No matter which direction, best practices call for companies to constantly assess their fleet operations and productivity.  Part of that assessment process entails looking into the current fleet size, number of drivers, and the productivity of each.  Performing this task manually can be cumbersome or even an impossible mission, mainly because in order to make relevant assessments, it is required to have vast amounts of relevant information readily available and some of that data needed might be non-existent.

The following is some of the basic information needed to start an assessment:

  • Vehicles/Drivers daily, weekly, and monthly miles driven
  • Vehicles/Drivers daily, weekly, and monthly driving Time
  • Vehicles/Drivers daily, weekly, and monthly Trips taken
  • Time on Location information per Driver
  • Vehicles Maintenance track records

This basic information is vital in order to perform a proper assessment.  The problem lies in that most companies that do not use a fleet management system, normally do not collect this information, or if they do, it is done manually and it can be time consuming to collect it all and generate the reports needed.  This is where a fleet management system can come in and save the day.  This system can automatically track and store this information with no extra work required or any manual inputs.  It pretty much simplifies the process.  The system allows owners to quickly summarize the information via reports that can be easily interpreted and used to assess the fleet’s performance and productivity.  With this vital information owners can easily evaluate if they need to either reduce or increase their fleets, add or remove drivers, and improve performance to increase productivity.  All of this decisions can generate significant costs savings, and most important of all, a higher productivity which equates to extra revenue for the company.

A fleet management system can make the impossible look easy.  The improvements to a company’s operations can be astounding and depending on the size of the company, the costs savings alone can be in the millions of dollars.  This is without mentioning the extra revenue that it can bring for a company. Depending on size again, this can lead to tens of millions in extra revenue.  These last few years have proven that a fleet management system is a game changer and it is no longer viewed as a luxury but as a business requirement in order to succeed in today’s market.   Don’t wait! Upgrade your operations now and start seeing amazing results.
